The studio objectives are:

  • The conceptual link between (tensile) fabric, the craft of manufacturing, and the direct logistics of that craft as applied to architectural design will be vigorously explored
  • Familiarize students with SST mesh as a contemporary building material with a significant aesthetic and performative potential
  • Research, document and clasify its variety of uses, topologies, static or dynamic principles
  • Place it in the context of tensile and fabric architecture through the ages
  • Study the detailing of the common systems per type of mesh material; compare them to technologies and detailing used in tents, sailships, bridges and sculpture
  • Generate and develop ideas for use of existing mesh systems or design new mesh systems as a byproduct of an individual design assignment
